Kayla Dunbar

Movement Director

Kayla is a theatre/dance artist currently located on the stolen lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. A 1st generation Scottish Settler on unceded Coast Salish Territory, her love of storytelling was cultivated from a young age. Kayla graduated from Langley Fine Arts Secondary, and then graduated from Studio 58, where she received the Sydney J. Risk award/scholarship. Kayla is committed to: her continued education on anti-racist practices, courageous leadership, allyship, dismantling white supremacy, troubling the status quo, and using her privilege to be of great service to her community. She believes that storytelling and movement can change the world. Gratitude and thanks to her family, friends, mentors, and partner.
Credits
She’s worked for: Delinquent Theatre, Savage Society, Urban Ink, Bard on the Beach, Chemainus Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse, City Opera, The Elbow, Itsazoo, Zee Zee Theatre, Gateway and more. Kayla has been nominated for 12 Jessie Awards. In 2019, she received a Jessie for directing Elephant and Piggie’s: We Are In a Play at CTYP and was nominated for movement direction for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime at Arts Club. Most recently, Kayla directed a short film of the musical What’s Your Wish with Children’s Theatre of Richmond, directed Herringbone with PSP, created/directed a new piece at Studio 58 called The Wax In His Wings, and participated in the 2020 Director’s Lab North (virtual edition).
